Flow Method: When Challenge Meets Skill

CreativeMotivation DailyMotivation

As creatives, we meet various challenges in our creative ventures. I find that the most challenging task I take up; are the ones I love the most.

Ok, call me weird, but if the task isn't challenging and requires a lot of skill, I'm not profoundly connected to it.

To find a balance and to perform at my best, I need a challenging task or project that is meaningful and intriguing, and I need well-developed, time learnt skills so that I am very confident that I can joyfully meet that challenge. So this is where the "Flow” experience happens. Involved and actively engaged in the activity.

According to Happiness researcher Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, (pronounced phonetic guide: “Me high? Cheeks send me high!”) ", The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times . . . The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.”

Csikszentmihalyi became a happiness researcher because of the adversity he faced growing up. He was a prisoner during World War II, and he witnessed the pain and suffering of the people around him during this time. As a result, he developed a curiosity about happiness and contentment. Do research him and watch his TED Talk.

So if you’ve ever found yourself "in the zone”, it is when your performance is excelled or at a peak. So this absorbing, experience is described as being in the flow. Flow occurs when your skill level and the challenge at hand are equal.

As I was creating today, I was deeply in the flow; the house was quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Whilst in the flow, I did encounter creative challenges, which I have purposely left in the tutorial so that when you decide to watch it, you too will understand that practice makes progress. Through that progress, the skill is mastered, which leads to what you may refer to as perfection.

I enjoy creating and teaching. Creativity is like medicine to my soul.

Do what you love, and enjoy distancing yourself from distractions so that you will experience the flow that is an internal divine gift. ❤️
