The OMU is not merely a ceremonial title but a position of profound responsibility and influence. Appointed by the king, she serves as the leader of women in the kingdom, protector of the market, spiritual guide, and a crucial advisor to the king and his council. Her role encompasses various facets of community life, making her an indispensable pillar of Anioma society.

Commitment and Sacrifice

Assuming the role of OMU requires a deep commitment and significant personal sacrifice. An OMU must embrace celibacy and remain unmarried. If she was previously married, she must separate from her husband and move back to her father’s home. There, a special palace is built for her, enabling her to carry out her duties with dignity and respect. This level of dedication underscores the gravity and honor associated with the role.

It is a tangible connection to the ancestors and a reminder of the enduring legacy of the OMU’s role in the community.
