This esteemed position, reserved for a woman of exceptional qualities, transcends the conventional roles often attributed to female traditional rulers. The OMU, also known as the NneOmumu, Queen Mother, embodies leadership, wisdom, and spiritual guidance, reflecting a tradition that has endured for over 820 years.

Appointed by the king, she serves as the leader of women in the kingdom, protector of the market, spiritual guide, and a crucial advisor to the king and his council. Assuming the role of OMU requires a deep commitment and significant personal sacrifice. An OMU must embrace celibacy and remain unmarried. If she was previously married, she must separate from her husband and move back to her father’s home. There, a special palace is built for her, enabling her to carry out her duties with dignity and respect. This level of dedication underscores the gravity and honor associated with the role.

Symbol of Authority

The authority of the OMU is symbolized by the Nze Omu/Ofor, an ancestral symbol passed down from one OMU to the next. This symbol represents her sacred duty and the continuity of her leadership.
