Wearing a face mask has become part of our new normal. To make a great looking, good quality, and long-lasting face mask that serves the wearer well, it matters that I upcycle and reuse as much discarded textiles as possible. Mindfully using each piece of material to create a one of a kind, statement safety wears that is different from the rest.
For the making of this face mask, I have used scraps of repurposed denim jeans, which I have purposely distressed, together with parts of vintage floral lace, African print, and indigo-dyed adire textiles from South Western, Nigeria.
All these materials have been reconstructed and pieced back together by hand and sewing machine with zero-waste. The placements of the stud detailing finishes off this face mask beautifully, adding a touch and feel of afro-centric punk to this style.
This mask is handmade with three layers of fabrics. The top layer features the appliqued designs, which are backed with adire textile. The third layer is lined with 100% African print cotton. The use of cotton lining makes this face mask breathable and comfortable to wear. It also features para-cord tie backs which can be tied behind the head and tightened to the wearers preferred fit.
This mask is not N95 or FDA rated, it is specifically designed as preventative safety wear to shield your face, mouth, and nose. The wearing of a face mask such as this could still reduce the transmissibility of viral particles by a small but significant amount, enough to make a difference to you and others.
