Speaking the Unspeakable Through Creativity: A Reflection on Mental Health and “Taking Off the Mask”

On October 18th, 2024, I co-facilitated the “Take Off the Mask” event with Mrs. Folaji Fasanya-Omoyeni at Milton Keynes Blue Light Hub. The event, part of Black History Month and Mental Health Week, offered emergency service staff a creative outlet to address mental health through beaded jewellery-making. By focusing on creative therapy, participants took a break from their demanding roles, using the activity to express emotions and unwind. This session allowed them to “take off the mask” of professionalism and connect with themselves and others, promoting mental well-being and open conversations around mental health.
