There's so much beauty in repurposing and transforming what we have, into beautiful one of a kind statement that brings joy to our adventurous selves.
I’m so sure you have a drawer or boxes specially dedicated to stowing away the scarves that you have collected for years, and old clothes, that you hate to give away, just because they hold sentimental value to you. Perhaps, you have piles of pieces of jewellery, or broken gems tucked away in your Aladdins gem cave that’s towering over your jewellery stand.
It’s time to get super creative and revamp our most cherished items. Let’s breath new lease of life into them, so they can continue to serve us longer.
Without further ado, let us make a start.
STEP ONE
Start by cutting up your bandana into a strip with a pair of scissors. Once done, prepare the bandana by folding, ready for the wrapping stage.
Then, attach one end of the folded fabric to the inside of your earrings with superglue and allow to dry. Once the super-glue is dry, proceed to wrap the strip tightly around the earrings, overlapping if necessary.
Upon reaching the end of your earrings, apply the super glue inside your earrings to keep the strip of fabric in place. Trim off any loose frays if necessary.
STEP TWO
Thread onto a headpin a teardrop glass bead, followed by a bead end cap and a rope end cap.
Trim the end of your headpin with side cutter pliers. Then proceed to form a loop with your round nose pliers. Repeat this process to create three more beaded headpins.
STEP THREE
Next, cut the yarns into strips. For my pair, I have used three shades of colours, which I have cut into two-three long strips, per colour.
Split all your yarns collectively into a half, then cross over one half of the yarn over the other half, then fold, ready for braiding.
Secure your folded yarns in place, with a tape, making sure all yarns are tightly together.
Divide the yarns into three sections, then cross the left section over the middle section, then the right section over the middle section. Continue this process until you reach the end.
Upon reaching the end, make a tight double knot to secure. Then trim off any loose ends with scissors, and seal off with a lit lighter. Wrap the braided yarn around the outer part of your earrings, to ensure the fit is correct.
STEP FOUR
Take one of your jewellery wires, and form a loop on one end of the wire with your round nose pliers.
Measure the wire around your hoop earrings for fit, allowing yourself extra length on the opposite end for looping. Then, trim down to size with side cutter pliers.
Once done, thread onto your wire five crystal glass beads, then seed beads, a further glass bead, then insert the beaded headpin, then another glass bead. Repeat this process until you reach the end.
Pull the beads tightly together and trim the wire with your side cutters pliers.
STEP FIVE
Once you’ve trimmed your wire to your desired size, form a loop with your round nose pliers.
Using fishing wire, wrap the beaded wire onto the braided yarn. Making sure you wrap in between each bead until you reach the end.
Upon reaching the end, knot the clear fishing wire onto the beaded wire and the braided yarn. Cut off excess wires, and seal with a lit lighter.
Once the wrapping stage is completed, apply the super glue along the inside of the braid then hold against the outside of your hoop earrings, unto dry. Repeat this step in stages, until you reach the end.
STEP SIX
Thread onto your needle a clear fishing wire. Double knot at the end.
Insert the needle through the top of the braid, then through the middle, and then through the front. Thread the needle through the knotted loop, pull tightly to secure, and tie into a knot.
Thread a glass seed bead, a brass disc charm and another seed bead. Insert the needle through the braid, then back again through the front. Thread a seed bead, a brass disc charm and a seed bead. Repeat this process until you reach the end. Once your threading is completed, knot your clear fishing wire and trim off excess with scissors, then seal off with a lit lighter. Repeat this same process for the other side of the braid.
Congratulations! You have completed one part of your earrings. Now repeat all the processes for the other side of your earrings.
STEP SEVEN
Your finished pair of earrings look like this
